Counting Points

Context

A one-on-one play between Adam and Bill, and Adam finished this round first. Let’s also pretend that this is the 2nd round of this game.

Bill has:

  • 2 unplayed cards – 9 of spades and a joker
  • 6 melds
    • 1 run (8 to Queen of hearts)
    • 5 books: 2s, Kings, 8s, 6s, 5s
  • 3 canastas
    • 2 black
    • 1 red

Adam has:

  • No unplayed cards since he’s the one that went out i.e. finished this round, therefore no points against him.
  • 3 melds
    • 3 books: Queens, Jacks and 6s
  • 5 canastas
    • 3 black
    • 2 red

Step 1 - Canasta Points

In this first step you only add the points provided by the canastas you each completed.

Bill:

Subtotal 1 = 1,100 points

Adam:

Subtotal 1 = 3,400 points

Step 2 - Card Points

Each player gathers all the cards they played (melds and canastas) and adds up their points based on each card’s value.

Bill:

  • Melds
    • Run (8 to Queen of hearts) → 5 x 10 = 50
    • Book of 2s → 3 x 20 = 60
    • Book of Kings → 4 x 10 = 40
    • Book of 8s → (4 x 10) + 50 (joker) = 90
    • Book of 6s → 4 x 5 = 20
    • Book of 5s → 4 x 5 = 20
  • Canastas
    • Book of Kings → (5 x 10) + (2 x 20) = 90
    • Book of Aces → (6 x 20) + 50 (joker) = 170
    • Book of Jacks → 7 x 10 = 70

Subtotal 2 = 610 points

Adam:

  • Melds
    • Book of Queens → 3 x 10 = 30
    • Book of Jacks → 5 x 10 = 50
    • Book of 6s → 6 x 5 = 30
  • Canastas
    • Book of 8s → (5 x 10) + (2 x 20) = 90
    • Book of 10s → (5 x 10) + 20 (2) + 50 (Joker) = 120
    • Book of 9s → (5 x 10) + 20 (2) + 50 (Joker) = 120
    • Book of 2s → 7 x 20 = 140
    • Book of 4s → 7 x 5 = 35

Subtotal 2 = 615 points

Same cards as step 1, the canastas are just spread so you can see every card they contain.

Step 3 - Unplayed cards

Last step before tallying the points. The player that did not go out was left holding unplayed cards and maybe even didn’t get to his Foot. If that’s the case, that would be 13 other cards that would count against them. In this scenario Bill did get to play his Foot and was only left with 2 unplayed cards.

Bill:

  • 9 of spades = -10
  • Joker = -50

Subtotal 3 = -60 points

Adam:

  • No unplayed cards therefore = 0 points againts him

Subtotal 3 = 0 points

Step 4 - Tallying this 2nd round

Add everything up and don’t forget about the bonus…

Bill:

  • Subtotal 1 = 1,100
  • Subtotal 2 = 610
  • Subtotal 3 = -60

Round #2 total = 1,650 points

Adam:

  • Subtotal 1 = 3,400
  • Subtotal 2 = 615
  • Subtotal 3 = 0
  • Bonus for going out = 100

Round #2 total = 4,115 points

Step 5 - Ongoing game total

As mentioned in the context, we’re pretending that this was the 2nd round between Adam and Bill, therefore let’s also pretend they have the following points from the 1st round and bring everything together.

Bill:

  • Round 1 = 2,550
  • Round 2 = 1,650

Ongoing game total = 4,200 points

Adam:

  • Round 1 = 1,805
  • Round 2 = 4,115

Ongoing game total = 5,920 points
